NCBEA - October
2008
QUIA Workshop: From A to Z
Want to learn how to use QUIA to truly benefit your students'
learning? Are you daunted by where to begin? If so, this workshop is for you!
Sponsored by the Business Education Division of NCACTE, this workshop will be
held Saturday, October 25, 2008, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the College of the
Albemarle in Manteo, 205 Hwy 64/264. Registration fees are $40 for NCACTE/NCBEA
members; $50 for non-members. The workshop will include four hours of homework,
which combined will allow you to earn one (1) technology CEU. Topics will
include setting up classes, designing class pages, importing and designing
quizzes, managing your test bank, and creating activities. For more information,
contact Julia Ray at
teacherjulia@earthlink.net, and download the registration form at
www.ncbea.org/ncacte-workshop.doc. Registration deadline is October 15.
Congratulations to Dr. Ivan Wallace!
In response to a nomination to award Dr. Ivan Wallace of East
Carolina University with Honorary Membership status, the NCBEA Board of
Directors unanimously approved the recommendation and recognized Dr. Wallace for
his exceptional service and long-standing support of our organization. Dr.
Wallace is a past president of NCBEA and has served on the board in several
positions for many years. He is currently the chair of the professional
development committee and has organized cutting-edge technology workshops
throughout the state. As noted in our bylaws (www.ncbea.org/bylaws.htm),
"honorary membership can be conferred upon any person who has made a significant
contribution to business education or to the Association." Ivan has made many
significant contributions to both our discipline and our organization, and he
continues to play a vital role at the regional (SBEA) and national (NBEA)
levels. Many thanks, Ivan, for your dedication and professionalism!
NCBEA Goes High-Tech Green
NCBEA recently went “green” by using 21st century skills to conduct
the September 2008 board meeting. Although a few board members attended the
Saturday meeting in person at North Carolina A&T State University, several
others participated virtually from the comfort of their homes or local offices.
The virtual attendees were able to participate in oral and text conversations,
share documents, and view live video of all parties in attendance.
Click here to see a screen shot of the
meeting in progress. The excitement and progressive nature of the virtual
meeting was well worth the practice and preparation. The amount of travel time
and gas saved was impressive, especially considering those who would have
traveled up to four hours to attend this two hour meeting.
NBEA/SBEA Membership Report
Submitted by Madeline Tucker, NC NBEA Membership Director - The
membership drive for NBEA/SBEA held at the CTE Summer Conference in Greensboro
was a success. Reports received recently from NBEA show North Carolina at
101.17% with 259 current members for July 2008. Incentives provided for
membership included Koozie NBEA lunch coolers as well as a chance to win a $100
gas card. Sandra Cox of Concord, NC, was the lucky winner of the gas gift card.
NBEA/SBEA membership does have its privileges as members receive discounted
registration to both SBEA and NBEA.

NCBEA - August
2008
Annual Meeting and Dinner
The 2008 Annual Meeting and Dinner -- sponsored by Cengage Learning
-- was a great success! It was held on
Wednesday, July 23, 2008, in conjunction with the NC DPI CTE Summer Conference
in Greensboro. Approximately 70 members and guests were in attendance.
The guest speaker, Dr. Mark Snyder, made an engaging presentation on Teaching
and Learning in Exponential Times. A copy of his PowerPoint presentation is
available on our website at http://www.ncbea.org.
Several awards were presented and new officers were installed. Gratitude is
extended to Cindi Sweeney for chairing the Annual Meeting Committee and
organizing the event and to Patrick Delaney of Cengage Learning for sponsoring
the dinner.
NCBEA/King's College Reception
The Annual Meeting and Dinner was followed by a very well attended
reception co-sponsored by NCBEA and King's College of Charlotte. Snacks,
beverages, and networking with colleagues were enjoyed by all. The King's
College staff did an exceptional job organizing the reception.
Membership Perks!
Members who joined or renewed their NCBEA membership during the
Summer Conference in July received flash drives with the NCBEA logo. The big
door prize this year was a $100 Staples gift certificate, which was won by
George Brooks. All active members are eligible for the professional development
stipends for first-time attendance at SBEA or NBEA as well as the scholarship
for continuing education credits. Take advantage of our professional development
programs by clicking on the Stipend and/or Scholarship links at the bottom left

New BITE Curriculum Released
The Business and Information Technology Education staff at the North
Carolina Department of Public Instruction released two new curriculum products
during the 2008 Summer Conference: 6208 Exploring Business Technologies
(middle level), and 6411 Computer Applications I. Both of these
curriculum products were developed using the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy (RBT).
In the new RBT curriculum products, teachers can expect to see:
Computer Applications I (and all other high school RBT) teachers do not have
access to a classroom assessment bank during the field test year of the new
curriculum (2008-2009). All the items in the combined classroom and
accountability banks will undergo reliability testing during the field test
year. The validated and reliable classroom bank for Computer Applications I will
be released in Summer 2009. A statewide mid-term assessment covering
approximately the first half of the course will be administered. A statewide
final assessment covering the second half of the course will also be
administered. The purpose of these assessments is to gather data for the
reliability study. Teachers are cautioned NOT to use the assessment items from
the previous course as they are not aligned to the new course. Teachers should
evaluate students on the performance activities included in the curriculum
guide.
Exploring Business Technologies teachers do have access to the new classroom
bank aligned to the new course. These teachers have the classroom bank because
exploratory courses do not have secure post-assessments as the high school
courses do. Teachers may obtain the RBT curriculum guides on the DPI website at
this link
http://www.ncpublicschools.org/cte/business/course-descriptions.html (click
on the appropriate course). The curriculum guides at this site are in zipped PDF
format. Teachers who would like to have access to the RBT curriculum guides in
Word format rather than PDF format, may obtain the curriculum from their VoCATS
Coordinator, who can download the curriculum from the secure VoCATS FTP site.
(This is particularly helpful if teachers have students with IEPs or 504 Plans
who require modifications.)

NBEA/SBEA News
Submitted by Madeline Tucker,
North Carolina NBEA Membership Director
The National Business Education 2008 Annual Convention was held in San Antonio,
Texas March 19-22, 2008. Several NCBEA members attended the conference. Despite
the extra challenges due to weather delays and flight cancelations, members
enjoyed a variety of sessions, guest speakers, and networking opportunities.
NCBEA’s own Becky Peterson served as Postsecondary Program Director for the
convention. San Antonio Night at the Knibbe Ranch provided conference attendees
an opportunity to join their colleagues for a night of fun, good food, dancing,
and hayrides under the Texas sky.
Membership in NBEA continues to be a struggle. North Carolina currently has 226
NBEA members. We rank fourth in the Southeast. NBEA needs you! I’m sure all will
agree $75.00 annually is a great value for $250,000.00 of professional liability
insurance. In addition to the professional liability insurance, members receive
Keying In, Business Education Forum, and the NBEA Yearbook.
Members are also able to purchase other professional publications at a
discounted price. Membership in NBEA also gives you FREE membership in
the Southern Business Education Association. It also allows you to attend the
SBEA and NBEA conventions at a discounted price. The SBEA Convention will be
held October 30 to November 1, 2008, in Louisville, Kentucky. The 2009 NBEA
Convention will be held in Chicago. Membership does have its privileges, and it
is tax deductible! If you are not a member or have allowed your membership to
lapse, please take time to join or renew today. You may join or renew online at
http://www.nbea.org/member.html. Please help make North Carolina #1 in the
Southeast.
We Salute You!
Please join us in saluting Joan Belk of
Charlotte for 30 to 34 years of continuous membership in NBEA! Joan emulates the
consummate business educator who invests her time and talents not only in our
professional organizations, but in the teachers who struggle with the challenges
of our ever-changing discipline. She has truly made a significant difference in
many people's lives. Thanks, Joan, for your continued dedication to business
education and our professional organization!

From Barbara Boyd, NCBEA President
Elect...
The 2007 NBEA Annual Convention in New York
City was a great success. Spring in New York City was chilly, but the warmth was
in the entertainment, shopping, sightseeing, and outstanding convention
sessions.
NBEA's 2007 President Peter Meggison stated, "new challenges and
opportunities are constantly on the horizon to confront the tried-and-true
methodology to which we may be accustomed in our business education classrooms.
... As business education professionals, we must ... lead the change process to
secure the role of business education in the 21st century."
The informative and entertaining general sessions included Stuart Varney, former
host of MoneyLine's NewsHour; technology humorist, Greg Schwem; and performers
from "Hot on Broadway." Workshops and educational sessions carried the common
thread of infusing higher order thinking skills into the business education
curriculum. Hot convention topics included podcasting, game development, Perkins
IV and NCLB, Office 2007 and Vista, copyright and ethics, and many more.
NCBEA members who presented session included Ivan Wallace (The Gaming
Connection in Business & Information Technology Education), Beryl McEwen
(Suggestions from Journal Editors on How to Get Articles Published), Steven
Mark and Maureen Ellis (Movie Maker 2.1), and Deborah Seehorn
(This We Believe about Rigor in Business Education). Jamie Bluto
and Becky Petersen facilitated the First Timers' Session.

AWARD NOMINATIONS NEEDED BY JUNE 1
Nominations are requested for the 2007 NCBEA awards in the following categories:
Distinguished Service Award to an Administrator or Supervisor
Distinguished Service Award to a Business, Institution, or Individual
Before we know it, Summer Conference will be here, and it will be time to "rejuvenate" ourselves for the 2007-2008 school year. We all know of deserving individuals who have gone "above and beyond the call of duty" as they prepare our students for exciting business careers. Each year NCBEA presents awards to those individuals at Summer Conference. Everyone likes to be recognized, so let's do our part. This is an excellent opportunity to recognize our colleagues for their accomplishments in the profession. Let's "rejuvenate" that outstanding business teacher, administrator, business person or deserving student TODAY!
All award recipients must be NCBEA members, and nominations must also be made by NCBEA members. The nominee's contributions may have been made over an extended period of time, but the major impact must have occurred within three years prior the the nomination. NEW BUSINESS EDUCATION MASTER'S DEGREE
The Department of Business Education in the School of Business and Economics at North Carolina A&T State University is pleased to announce its new Master of Arts in Teaching Business Education (MAT-BE) degree. The program, which officially started in the spring 2006, is now in its second year.
Like most other MAT programs, its primary goal is to train public school educators for the middle and high school levels. Are you looking for an end-of-the-semester activity for Business Computer Technology?
I use the movie “War Games” as a culminating unit for BCT. The movie was copyrighted in 1983 and stars Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman, John Woods, and Ally Sheedy. The movie is 114 minutes long and is available in both VCR and DVD format. Because the movie is rated PG, I ask my students to turn in a movie permission form. (There is no violence, no sex, just some adult language.)
Synopsis of the movie: “A young computer whiz kid accidentally connects into a top secret super-computer which has complete control over the U.S. nuclear arsenal. It challenges him to a game between America and Russia, and he innocently starts the countdown to World War 3. Can he convince the computer he wanted to play a game and not the real thing?”
Competencies/Objectives Covered:
CT01.01 Identify the parts and used of a computer hardware system.
CT01.02 Analyze the information processing cycle including various storage methods.
CT02.01 Evaluate the changing role of technology and its effect on society.
CT02.02 Discuss security, confidentiality and ethical issues as related to computer usage.
CT02.03 Identify and explain terminology, advantages and uses of telecommunications.
Students are able to see how computer systems have changed since the early 1980s, view early video arcade games, see how technology has changed computer modems, telephones, flying, and various security systems. Because the computer (Joshua) needed to ‘learn’, artificial intelligence can be discussed. Students can define the terms: portable storage method, modem, firewall, backdoor, hacker and fantasy as described in the movie and update the definition to relate to today’s use. Dr. McKintrick is the director of the computer system; students can debate what type of degree he earned, remembering this was back in the early 1980s. A Socratic Seminar can be used to discuss the various ethical issues raised in the movie. For example the seminar can discuss: David’s “phone” usage, changing grades, hacking into a computer system, and military application of computers instead of people. I have my students complete a worksheet as they view the movie to help them notice the key points. I also stop the movie to point out difference between yesterday and today’s technology.
