The John M. Bunch Student Scholarship was established in 1990 by NCBEA with the original contribution by John Bunch of $2,000 matched by donations from NCBEA members. Since 1991, donations and contributions to the John M. Bunch Student Scholarship Fund have been made by members, businesses, publishers, and through various fundraising activities. In February, 1993, the NCBEA Board of Directors voted to award the first scholarships—two $250 scholarships to be announced at NCBEA’s Annual Meeting in July. Currently, scholarships are $500 or $1000.

Purpose:  The purpose of the John M. Bunch Student Scholarship is to provide an incentive for high school students enrolled in business courses to further their education in the area of business and/or business education. It is not expected that these scholarships will be the sole financial support for tuition, but will be a financial reward and personal recognition to those selected.

Name:  The scholarship is named for John M. Bunch, who over the years has contributed so much to the education of children within North Carolina in the area of business. John Bunch was the first president of the North Carolina Business Education Association (NCBEA).

Administration:  The scholarship will be administered through the Past Presidents’ Committee of the North Carolina Business Education Association. This association is composed of business teachers throughout the state of North Carolina. The funds will be disbursed through the financial aide office at the enrolling institution.

The following criteria will be observed for scholarship eligibility:

  1. The student must be nominated by an NCBEA member in good standing.
  2. Any student in the high school is eligible who is taking one or more business education subjects at the time of application and who has a career interest in business as defined by the Vocational Division of the State Department of Public Instruction.
  3. The student must plan to pursue this interest in any institution of higher education including technical schools, community colleges, private one- or two-year institutions and four-year institutions as appropriately licensed by the State of North Carolina for that purpose. The student must enroll in this institution within the six months after graduation from high school.
  4. Each school may nominate no more than two candidates.
  5. The student candidate should be of senior rank in high school at the time that the awards committee makes its selection for this award.
  6. The local selection process for nominees will be at the school level and determined by the faculty of business teachers of that school. The overriding criteria for this award is to be a deserving student based on the demonstrated effort given to learning and the decision of a career in the business world.
  7. All other criteria considered for nomination shall be at the discretion of the local school as long as such criteria does not promote or deny any student from being considered because of circumstances other than the demonstrated effort to learning and an expectation for continuing educational pursuits beyond high school.
  8. The scholarship nomination form must be completed and returned by the designated date. This form is to be signed by the candidate and the nominating business teacher.
